Champions League Review

Group A
Roma claimed top spot after a 2-0 win over Bordeaux, a result which ended the French side's hopes of progress.

Matteo Brighi slotted in a low Simone Perrotta cross to break the deadlock just after the hour mark before Francesco Totti fired in from the edge of the box.

Chelsea took second place with a nervous 2-1 win over Cluj, who had already been condemned to bottom place.

The Blues, needing a win to guarantee a place in the last 16, went ahead when Salomon Kalou deftly controlled and finished Deco's free-kick, but Yssouf Kone equalised with a superb header.

Substitute Didier Drogba sealed victory for Luiz Felipe Scolari's side with a sharp finish after a slick move.

Progress for Chelsea means England and Spain will both provide four teams in the last 16, the first time two nations have achieved the feat.

Group B
Inter Milan had to settle for second place behind Panathinaikos after a 2-1 defeat at Werder Bremen.

Following a drab first half, Claudio Pizarro put the hosts ahead after Mesut Ozil's shot had been saved and Markus Rosenberg made it 2-0.

Substitute Zlatan Ibrahimovic curled in a stunning 25-yard consolation, but Werder held on to seal a place in the Uefa Cup.

Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta came into their match against Panathinaikos with a chance of progress to the last 16 in their debut season - but ultimately went out of European competition altogether.

Midfielder Giorgos Karagounis won it for the Greeks with the only goal of the game, collecting a cross from Dimitris Salpingidis and firing in a shot that squirmed over the body of substitute goalkeeper Zoltan Nagy.

Group C
The Group C placings had already been decided before the final round of games.

First-placed Barcelona fielded a weakened side at the Nou Camp and saw their 20-match unbeaten run ended by Uefa Cup-bound Shakhtar Donetsk.

A brace from Oleksandr Gladkyy put the Ukrainians in control before Silvinho pulled one back.

Fernandinho finished a cross at the far post to restore the Ukrainians' two-goal advantage before Sergio Busquets notched a consolation eight minutes from time.

Basle ended their campaign on a solitary point after a 1-0 defeat at Sporting Lisbon.

Sporting, who won thanks to Yannick Djalo's first-half goal, finished second in the group on 12 points.

Group D
Liverpool claimed top spot in Group D with an impressive 3-1 win at PSV, who missed out on the Uefa Cup.

Rafael Benitez's side went behind to an early Danko Lazovic goal, but Ryan Babel headed in an equaliser before half-time.

Albert Riera's superb 25-yard strike put the visitors ahead and David Ngog's first goal for the club wrapped up the win.

Atletico Madrid had to match Liverpool's result to finish top but could only manage a 0-0 draw away to Marseille, a result which was enough for the French side to clinch a Uefa Cup place.
